Anti Siphon Vacuum Breaker
Q. Do I need to install a Vacuum Break or BackFlow Preventor? - YES! Vacuum Breakers and Backflow Preventors are designed to prevent water from flowing back from your drip irrigation system into your household water in the event of pressure loss in the water mainline.
Vacuum Breakers: aka Irrigation Backflow Preventers, Anti Siphon Breaker: Irrigation backflow preventer prevents contamination of your water supply. Back 
siphon can occur if negative pressure is present in the city water mainline or if the mainline bursts or freezes. Irrigation backflow preventer acts as a one way check valve and if the mainline pressure drops, the Vacuum Breaker's internal check valve opens and dumps the water before entering your potable water source. Most municipalities require backflow prevention devices at the beginning of most irrigation systems.
Vacuum Breakers must be installed 1 foot higher then the highest elevation in your landscape to operate properly (Most household water faucets are fine). Check with your water district for local codes and requirements.
