This kit contains everything you will need to connect to a hose bib (faucet) with an inline filter and pressure regulator. For a Y-Filter, buy our DK-WSCY kit. From there you can buy a drip irrigation kit to water your landscape, garden, or containers.

You will attach a Y Ball Valve, Filter, Pressure Regulator, and Hose Thread Swivel to the faucet or garden hose. Note: Most new home construction codes require the installation of a hose vacuum breaker on all exterior faucets. If you do not have a hose vacuum breaker installed, you should purchase a Hose Vacuum Breaker and install it between the Y Ball Valve and the filter.

A Hose End Timer (DD-HEDT) can also be purchased separately.

Drip Irrigation System Water Source Connection Kit for Hose Bibb with Inline Filter

Description

This kit contains everything you will need to connect to a hose bib (faucet) with an inline filter and pressure regulator. For a Y-Filter, buy our DK-WSCY kit. From there you can buy a drip irrigation kit to water your landscape, garden, or containers.

Installation: Overview

You will attach a Y Ball Valve, Filter, Pressure Regulator, and Hose Thread Swivel to the faucet or garden hose. Note: Most new home construction codes require the installation of a hose vacuum breaker on all exterior faucets. If you do not have a hose vacuum breaker installed, you should purchase a Hose Vacuum Breaker (DD-HVB) and install it.

If you want to automate your drip system, a Hose End Timer (DD-HEDT) can also be purchased separately.    

Installation: Step-by-Step

Connecting to the Hose Bibb  

1. Screw the Y Ball Valve (DD-YBV75) onto the hose bibb (faucet).
   1. If your hose bibb does not have a hose vacuum breaker already installed, screw a Hose Vacuum Breaker (DD-HVB)(not included) onto the Y Ball Valve.
   2. Note: If you have purchased an optional Hose End Timer (DD-HEDT) screw it onto the Y Ball Valve first. Then attach the Hose Vacuum Breaker or filter to the Hose End Timer.
2. Screw the Filter (DD-HIF75) on next.
3. Screw the Regulator (DD-HPR25-HQ) onto the filter.
4. Screw the Direct-Loc Swivel Adapter (DL-FHS600) onto the regulator.

You are now ready to attach drip poly tubing.

Maintenance Tips

WINTERIZING

If you live where it freezes, it is a good idea to drain the water from your drip lines and the components connected to the water source. Here’s how:

1. Turn off the hose bibb.
2. If you have a hose-end timer installed, let the system run through a watering cycle. This will open the timer and let any remaining water drain out of the timer and other components & into the drip tubing.
3. If you do not have a timer installed, unscrew the drip system from the hose bibb for a few minutes to let air into the line. Reattach the line after a minute or two. 
4. Note: We do not recommend blowing compressed air though a drip system.

FLUSH THE LINE ANUALLY

Since drip systems operate at low pressures, sediment can settle in the line over time.

1. Flush the line annually by unscrewing the end cap at the end of the line.
2. Check filter screen for debris and clean if necessary.
3. Turn on the hose bibb until the water runs clear from the end of the line.
4. Replace the cap.
5. Turn on the hose bibb and check the entire system for leaks.

REPAIR BREAKS & LEAKS

1. Small holes in the line can be plugged with a goof plug.
2. For larger breaks or holes in the 1/4” drip tubing, make a clean cut around the damaged area and reconnect the lines with a 1/4” barbed connector (DD-C250) purchased separately.
3. For larger breaks or holes in the 1/2” drip tubing, make a clean cut around the damaged area and reconnect the lines with a 1/2” Direct-Loc coupling (DL-C600).

Upgrade Your Drip Hole Punch & Save Time

A clean cut makes it easier

Some drip irrigation hole punches are shaped like a pencil and simply poke a hole as they push through the tubing. They require more force and can slip off of the drip tubing before they make the hole. The Super Punch (shown here) has a squeeze handle and is only $9.90. A less expensive option is our Deluxe Hole Punch which has a sharp, circular cutting edge. It's comfotable, easy on your hands, and costs only $3.60.

Adjust Water Flow to Garden Boxes With a Flow Control Valve

1/2" Valve fits over mainline tubing

These valves are great when you have garden boxes or drip areas that you may want to turn off seasonally. You can reduce the flow or shut it off completely. 1/2" Flow  Control Valves are installed just like a compression coupler.

Use Teflon tape on pipe threads

For a water-tight seal

Always use Teflon tape with pipe-threaded fittings. Wrap Teflon tape clockwise 4 - 5 times around pipe threads. Hose-thread fittings use a hose washer to make a water-tight seal.

Check hose washers on hose-thread fittings

To ensure water-tight seal

Over time, hose washers can compress or deteriorate, causing fittings to leak. Check garden hoses and fittings for a flexible hose washer. Replace brittle or worn washers. Insert a hose filter washer for a little added filtration in your hose or drip poly tubing. If the fitting still leaks, try adding a second washer. For pipe threads, use Teflon tape.

How do I determine my household water pressure?

How do I determine my water flow rate?

The flow rate is the amount of water flowing through your water supply line. Since drip emitters and micro sprays consume x gallons per hour, it is important to know the flow rate available to feed your emitters. It is measured in gallons per hour (GPH). To determine the flow rate out of your faucet (hose bibb, spigot, hydrant), read our tutorial on Determing Your Flow Rate.

How do I hook a drip system up to the water supply?

Our Connecting to the Water Source tutorial will outline all the components needed to set up a hose bibb connection or connect to the main water supply.

How do I choose a pressure regulator?

Drip irrigation systems are designed to operate between 20 and 30 psi. Most household water systems are set between 50-70 psi (or higher). A pressure regulator is required to reduce the household water pressure down to the proper range for drip systems. When choosing between a 20 psi and 30 psi regulator, here are some guidelines:

• Non pressure-compensating emitters:  Use 20 psi regulator.
• Fogger mister bubblers: Use a 45 psi regulator.
• Hanging Baskets: Use a 30 psi regulator
• Drip Tape: Use a 10 psi regulator

When using micro sprays and bubblers be sure to consult the water output charts for each product as flow rates very with pressure. For more details, read our tutorial: How to Choose a Drip Regulator. 

Is a filter required?

While a filter is not required, it is highly recommended. Even the cleanest water has small particles in it that can clog drip emitters. Micro sprays are especially susceptible to clogging as the orifices in micro spray components are especially small. Debris can enter a municipal water supply if a mainline breaks or when there is new construction in the area. Well or lake water should always be filtered. Without a filter, you may need to manually take apart emitters to clean them and remove debris that would have been caught by an inexpensive filter. Compare and buy filters.

Filter

A filter contains a screen that is designed to remove particles from irrigation systems. Filters are critical components in a drip irrigation system. Drip emitters may clog if proper filtration is not provided. Typical screen mesh is 120, 150, and 200 mesh. The greater the number, the smaller the openings in the screen. 200 mesh is recommended for foggers (misters).

Hose Thread

Officially called "Garden Hose Thread" (GHT), hose threads are found on garden hoses and many irrigation parts and adapter fittings. Generally referred to as "3/4" hose threads" the outer diameter is 1.0625 inches and has a pitch of 11.5 tpi (threads per inch). Hose threads are NOT the same as pipe threads and should never be screwed into pipe threaded fittings.   

Male hose threads are found on the outside of a fitting and thread into female hose threads.

Female hose threads are found on the inside of a fitting and accept male hose threads.

Hose threads do not require Teflon tape or pipe dope (like pipe threads), just a hose washer. If you find a water leak with hose threads, it is most likely a worn hose washer. Pipe Thread

The common term for National Pipe Thread (NPT). Pipe threads require Teflon tape or pipe dope to create a water-tight seal. Do not thread together pipe threads and hose threads. See also Teflon Tape, Pipe Dope, Hose Thread.

Teflon Tape

A non-adhesive tape (made of Teflon non-stick material) that is used to create a water-tight seal with pipe threaded fittings. It is tightly wrapped in a clockwise motion 3-4 times around the male pipe threads. Male and female fittings are then threaded together.

Hose Washer

Rubber gasket found inside fittings with female hose threads that makes a water-tight seal. See also Hose Thread.
