Drip Irrigation Kit for Row Crops

Description

Installation: Overview

You will attach a Hose Vacuum Breaker, Filter, and Pressure Regulator to the faucet or garden hose. The supply line is 1/2” Solid Drip Tubing and is run at one end of garden rows. Drip tape rows are connected to 1/2” drip tubing with a barbed drip tape take-off fitting. We’ve included stakes for the 1/2” tubing. Drip tape is buried below the soil 4” - 6”.

Installation: Step-by-Step

Roll the poly tubing out in the sun to soften. Weigh it down and let the sun heat the tubing. This will make it easier to work with.

Step one: Connecting to the Hose Bibb 

1. Screw the Hose Vacuum Breaker (DD-HVB) onto the faucet. Note: If you have purchased an optional Hose End Timer (DD-HEDT) screw it onto the faucet first. Then attach the Hose Vacuum Breaker to the Hose End Timer.
2. Screw the Filter (DD-YS75HFM-200) onto the Hose Vacuum Breaker.
3. Screw the Regulator (DD-HPR10) onto the Filter.
4. Screw the Direct-Loc Swivel Adapter (DL-FHS600) onto the regulator.

Step Two: From the Hose Bibb to the Garden 

1. Attach 1/2” Drip Tubing (DD-DH700) to the 1/2” swivel adapter and run it to one end of the garden rows.
2. Secure the drip tubing in place with 8” Wire Stakes (DD-S8).
3. Add a Direct-Loc Threaded End Cap (DL-EC600) to the end(s) of 1/2” drip tubing. Leave the cap off for flushing.
4. Turn on the water and FLUSH THE LINE until all lines are clear of debris. Replace the 1/2” threaded end caps at the ends of the 1/2” drip tubing.  

Step Three: Installing Drip Tape Rows 

1. At each garden row use the Deluxe Hole punch (DD-HP250) to poke a hole in the 1/2” tubing.
2. Insert the 1/4” barb of the Drip Tape 5/8” x 1/4” Barb fitting (DT-TO250) directly into the 1/2” tubing until it snaps into place.
3. Screw the collar of the Drip Tape 5/8” x 1/4” Barb fitting down toward the fitting to expose the drip tape barb. Slip the Drip Tape (DT-1508HF-100 or DT-1508HF-500) over the barb. Screw the collar in the other direction so that it tightens down over the drip tape.
4. Roll drip tape down the row and cut with scissors to the desired row length.
5. Slide drip tape through the narrow end of the Drip Tape End (DT-TSE) so that it sticks out of the other end a few inches. Fold over two or three times. Pull back tubing lock it in place.
6. Your kit contains one or more threaded end caps. Attach a Tape Loc x Male End with End Cap (DT-EC58) to the end of a line for easier line flushing.
7. Drip should be buried 4”-6” below the soil surface. You may want to leave the ends of the tubing exposed slightly so that you can find them and flush the lines annually.
8. Turn on your system and check each row for water output.

• Goof Plugs (DD-GP) are used to plug holes in 1/2" drip poly tubing.
• The Direct-Loc Coupling (DL-C600) is used to connect 1/2" solid drip tubing or for repairs in 1/2” tubing that goof plugs can’t handle.
• The Direct Tape 5/8” Loc Coupler (DT-C58) is used to connect or repair 5/8" drip tape.

Maintenance Tips

WINTERIZING

If you live where it freezes, it is a good idea to drain the water from your drip lines and the components connected to the water source. Here’s how:

1. Turn off the hose bibb.
2. If you have a hose-end timer installed, let the system run through a watering cycle. This will open the timer and let any remaining water drain out of the timer and other components & into the drip tubing.
3. If you do not have a timer installed, unscrew the drip system from the hose bibb for a few minutes to let air into the line. Reattach the line after a minute or two. 
4. Note: We do not recommend blowing compressed air though a drip system.

FLUSH THE LINE ANUALLY

Since drip systems operate at low pressures, sediment can settle in the line over time.

1. Flush the line annually by unscrewing the end cap at the end of the line.
2. Check filter screen for debris and clean if necessary.
3. Turn on the hose bibb until the water runs clear from the end of the line.
4. Replace the cap.
5. Turn on the hose bibb and check the entire system for leaks.

REPAIR BREAKS & LEAKS

1. Small holes in the line can be plugged with a goof plug.
2. For larger breaks or holes in the 1/4” drip tubing, make a clean cut around the damaged area and reconnect the lines with a 1/4” barbed connector (DD-C250) purchased separately.
3. For larger breaks or holes in the 1/2” drip tubing, make a clean cut around the damaged area and reconnect the lines with a 1/2” Direct-Loc coupling (DL-C600).

A Paper Clip Quickly Cleans a Hole Punch

Insert the wire to clear the tool

A good hole punch will actually cut a tiny circle out of the drip tubing. The plug of tubing can be removed from the cutting edge of the punch with a paper clip. Push it through the cutting end to clear any plastic debris.

Fix Little Holes With a Goof Plug

Doubles as a 1/4" end plug

If you make a mistake and poke a hole in the wrong place on a drip line, insert a goof plug (small barb). If the hole gets worn and leaks a little, pull the plug out and use the large barbed end. Goof plus are also used to plug the end of 1/4" micro tubing.

Adjust Water Flow to Garden Boxes With a Flow Control Valve

1/2" Valve fits over mainline tubing

These valves are great when you have garden boxes or drip areas that you may want to turn off seasonally. You can reduce the flow or shut it off completely. 1/2" Flow  Control Valves are installed just like a compression coupler.

Fix Big Holes With a Coupler

If a goof plug won't do the trick

If you have a hole in a mainline poly pipe that is bigger than a goof plug, a compression coupling is the fitting to use. Make a clean cut and insert the two tubes into each end of the coupler. No glue required.

Check hose washers on hose-thread fittings

To ensure water-tight seal

Over time, hose washers can compress or deteriorate, causing fittings to leak. Check garden hoses and fittings for a flexible hose washer. Replace brittle or worn washers. Insert a hose filter washer for a little added filtration in your hose or drip poly tubing. If the fitting still leaks, try adding a second washer. For pipe threads, use Teflon tape.

How do I determine my household water pressure?

How do I determine my water flow rate?

The flow rate is the amount of water flowing through your water supply line. Since drip emitters and micro sprays consume x gallons per hour, it is important to know the flow rate available to feed your emitters. It is measured in gallons per hour (GPH). To determine the flow rate out of your faucet (hose bibb, spigot, hydrant), read our tutorial on Determing Your Flow Rate.

Drip Tape

Commonly used by commercial growers, drip tape is a thin-walled dripline with inline emitters pre-installed at preset spacings. The tape is flat and expands when filled with water. It is a great product for row crops and vegetable gardens. 

Drip tape fittings use a twisting mechanisim rather than compression or barbed fittings like conventional drip tubing.

Filter

A filter contains a screen that is designed to remove particles from irrigation systems. Filters are critical components in a drip irrigation system. Drip emitters may clog if proper filtration is not provided. Typical screen mesh is 120, 150, and 200 mesh. The greater the number, the smaller the openings in the screen. 200 mesh is recommended for foggers (misters).

Hose Thread

Officially called "Garden Hose Thread" (GHT), hose threads are found on garden hoses and many irrigation parts and adapter fittings. Generally referred to as "3/4" hose threads" the outer diameter is 1.0625 inches and has a pitch of 11.5 tpi (threads per inch). Hose threads are NOT the same as pipe threads and should never be screwed into pipe threaded fittings.   

Male hose threads are found on the outside of a fitting and thread into female hose threads.

Female hose threads are found on the inside of a fitting and accept male hose threads.

Hose threads do not require Teflon tape or pipe dope (like pipe threads), just a hose washer. If you find a water leak with hose threads, it is most likely a worn hose washer. Hose Washer

Rubber gasket found inside fittings with female hose threads that makes a water-tight seal. See also Hose Thread.
