700 Series Solid Poly Tubing – DD-DH700
The 700 series solid poly tubing from Irrigation Direct is used with drip irrigation for main and lateral water lines. It has a .700 outside diameter and a .600 inside diameter giving the tubing a .050 wall thickness.
Because of its softness, drip poly tubing is not meant to be buried. If buried, the tubing may compress and reduce or cut off the flow of water. Vermin such and gophers and moles are known to chew poly tubing that has been buried.
If you need to bury your drip poly tubing, it’s best to sleeve the buried length with rigid PVC tubing.
Its operating pressure is 10 - to 60 psi with its optimal pressure being 30 psi. Its maximum flow rate is 240 gallons per hour. It’s manufactured from high quality polyethylene resigns and UV inhibitors. With proper care and maintenance, poly tubing can last for up to 8 years. Mulching over tubing will extend the tubing’s life.
Solid poly tubing from Irrigation Direct comes in several lengths. There’s our 50ft, 100ft, 500ft and 1000ft rolls. The maximum distance that you can run drip tubing will vary with the number of emitters you install and the spacing between emitters.

The 700 series tubing uses either compression or direct-loc series fittings.
Before Installing, it’s best to let your drip tubing sit in the sun for at least 30 minutes. This softens the tubing and allows it to unroll for easier installation.
When unrolling the tubing, start by using a tubing holder stake or heavy object to keep the tubing in place. Then unroll the tubing as you would roll a tire. This helps to help keep the tubing from spiraling and causing kinks.
Once unrolled, use tubing holder stakes at 5 to 10 foot intervals to secure the tubing in place.
Now your tubing is ready for Drip Emitters or Micro Sprays.

What Size Is My Drip Tubing?
The tubing used for drip irrigation mainline varies in size. Even drip hose referred to as "1/2" drip tubing" will differ depending on where it was purchased. The inner and outer diameters vary slightly between tubing numbers. This is especially important when 
adding on to an existing drip system. An easy way for you to tell what size mainline tubing you have is by looking at the inner compression ring of the fitting as they are color coded. Compression fittings fit over the outside diameter of the tubing.Compression fittings have color coded rings that correspond to tubing sizes.

Upgrade Your Drip Hole Punch & Save Time
A clean cut makes it easier
Some drip irrigation hole punches are shaped like a pencil and simply poke a hole as they push through the tubing. They require more force and can slip off of the drip tubing before they make the hole. The Super Punch (shown here) has a squeeze handle and is only $9.90. A less expensive option is our Deluxe Hole Punch which has a sharp, circular cutting edge. It's comfotable, easy on your hands, and costs only $3.60.
Fix Little Holes With a Goof Plug
Doubles as a 1/4" end plug
If you make a mistake and poke a hole in the wrong place on a drip line, insert a goof plug (small barb). If the hole gets worn and leaks a little, pull the plug out and use the large barbed end. Goof plus are also used to plug the end of 1/4" micro tubing.
Adjust Water Flow to Garden Boxes With a Flow Control Valve
1/2" Valve fits over mainline tubing
These valves are great when you have garden boxes or drip areas that you may want to turn off seasonally. You can reduce the flow or shut it off completely. 1/2" Flow Control Valves are installed just like a compression coupler.
Fix Big Holes With a Coupler
If a goof plug won't do the trick
If you have a hole in a mainline poly pipe that is bigger than a goof plug, a compression coupling is the fitting to use. Make a clean cut and insert the two tubes into each end of the coupler. No glue required.

- How do I determine my water flow rate?
The flow rate is the amount of water flowing through your water supply line. Since drip emitters and micro sprays consume x gallons per hour, it is important to know the flow rate available to feed your emitters. It is measured in gallons per hour (GPH). To determine the flow rate out of your faucet (hose bibb, spigot, hydrant), read our tutorial on Determing Your Flow Rate.
- Is all 1/2" poly tubing (drip mainline) the same?
The short answer is no. Poly tubing may be called “1/2 inch” by manufacturers and retailers but if you look closely you’ll find that the tubing has specific Outer Diameter (OD) and Inner Diameter (ID) dimensions.
Common OD dimensions are:
.700 inches (called “700") Black fittings
.620 inches (called “620”) Green-ringed fittings
.710 inches (called “710”) Blue-ringed fittings
.580 inches (called “580”) Yellow-ringed fittings
.455 inches called "455") Red-ringed fittings

Installing Drip Tubing & Fittings
- How far can I run the 1/2” drip poly tubing (mainline)?
The maximum drip mainline run is determined by the flow rate, water pressure, the number of emitters on the line, and distance between the emitters. Our 700 tubing has a maximum flow rate of 240 gallons per hour. We recommend a 20psi or 30psi drip regulator.
For most residential drip irrigation systems using a hose bibb (faucet, spigot, hydrant) as the water supply, follow these guidelines:
Maximum drip mainline run: 500 ft
Maximum emitter output: 240 gallons per hour
Since a typical hose bibb delivers 240 gallons per hour, you can put 240 1 gallon-per-hour emitters on the line (or 480 1/2 gallon-per-hour emitters or 120 2 gallon-per-hour emitters).
This works up to a point. If you run your drip poly tubing over 500 feet, there will be some pressure loss, limiting the number of emitters that you can install. The number of emitters you can put on a single drip system varries with your available water flow, drip tubing size, and emitter water output. This tutorial will detail how many emitters you can put on a drip mainline.
Our Drip Tubing Maximum Run Chart (PDF) will help you compare different scenarios. The maximum pipe run will increase if you use low-output emitters (1/2 gallon-per-hour). Increasing pressure regulator size from a 20 psi regulator to a 30 psi regulator will also extend the distance that you can run drip main line.
